Single Women Are Buying Homes in DFW – and They’re Not Waiting for Anyone
Something significant is happening in real estate, and it’s been quietly building for decades.
Single women are now the second-largest group of homebuyers in the United States, outpacing single men more than two to one. According to the National Association of Realtors’ 2024 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, single women accounted for 20% of all home purchases in 2024. Single men? Just 8%.
That’s not a fluke. That’s a movement.

The Numbers Tell the Story
The data is striking … and consistent:
- Single women have outpaced single men as homebuyers every year for more than four decades, dating back to NAR’s first survey in 1981.
- Among first-time homebuyers, single women now represent 24% – nearly one in four.
- Single women householders own more than 20 million homes across the U.S., compared to 14.9 million owned by single men.
- In 2025, single women first-time buyers reported a median income of $73,000, actually outpacing their male counterparts for the first time in recent memory.
- Women own more homes than men in 31 major U.S. metropolitan areas.
What’s driving this? A narrowing wage gap. Greater financial independence. Longer life expectancy. A desire for stability. And a home that truly belongs to them.
As one sociologist put it, homeownership has become a symbol of the very real progress women have made in the workforce and in their personal lives.
Buying Solo Doesn’t Mean Going It Alone
Purchasing a home on your own is one of the most significant financial decisions you’ll ever make. It can feel like a lot, especially if you’re navigating it for the first time, or navigating it again after a major life change.
That’s where having the right agent makes all the difference.
Whether you’re a first-time buyer ready to stop renting and start building equity, or you’re in the middle of a life transition – a divorce, a downsizing, a fresh chapter – the process looks a little different for every buyer. And it should be treated that way.
If you’re going through a divorce or major life change, I also work specifically with clients navigating those moments. You can read more about how I help clients through life transitions here, and if divorce is part of your story, there’s dedicated information on working with a Divorce Real Estate Specialist in DFW.
What to Know Before You Buy on Your Own in DFW
Here are a few things that matter most when you’re buying as a solo buyer in the Dallas Fort Worth market:
Get pre-approved early. In a competitive market like DFW, knowing exactly what you can afford, and having that documentation ready, is the difference between making an offer and missing out.
Think about what the home needs to do for your life. Are you looking for more space? A neighborhood close to friends or family? A lower-maintenance property that fits a new chapter? Your priorities are yours to define.
Ask questions and lots of them. A good agent will make sure you understand every step of the process. You should never feel rushed, pressured, or like you’re just being moved along.
Know that you have an advocate. Buying alone doesn’t mean you’re unrepresented. Your buyer’s agent works for you. Full stop.
The DFW Market and What It Means for You
The Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex continues to be one of the most active real estate markets in the country. Inventory shifts, interest rate changes, and neighborhood dynamics all affect what you’ll find and what you’ll pay. Having a local expert in your corner – someone who knows the DFW market, including Flower Mound, Lewisville, Frisco, Coppell, Highland Village, and the surrounding communities – means you’re not navigating that alone.
Single women are buying homes confidently, strategically, and on their own terms. If that’s where you are, you deserve an agent who shows up the same way.
